5 Questions to Protect Your Peace: Navigating Post-Election Reflections

As we move through the aftermath of the election, I want to acknowledge the range of emotions within this community. Some of us were prepared for the outcome, while others are experiencing shock, and many fall somewhere in between. It’s natural to be in different places on this continuum, and we all must find ways to move forward that feel right and align with our values.

As many of you know, my journey in this community has evolved. Some of you came to know me through my work in social justice, mental health advocacy, or my own struggles with fertility and multiple pregnancy losses. These facets of my life are inseparable from who I am as a clinician and someone who holds space for others. As this community grows, I want to assure you that I remain committed to embodying the intersection of these values.

Our identities—our backgrounds, experiences, the privileges we hold, and the ways we’ve been disenfranchised—all shape our experiences. This reality is especially critical as we recognize the challenges that this new administration may bring. Many of us may feel vulnerable, and organizations continue working behind the scenes to support those most impacted.

Recently, I shared a video about the election but ultimately decided to take down a post that failed to honor the complexity of an already intense moment. Still, I stand by the core belief that community support is essential, especially as our systems continue to fall short in supporting those of us who are most vulnerable.

I’m reminded that one of the most fundamental forms of self-care is managing where you direct your energy versus what you allow yourself to absorb. For those of you navigating reproductive or grief journeys, your energy might feel limited right now. It’s normal to feel the need to turn inward, particularly in light of how this new administration might impact reproductive rights and freedoms.

As we continue to advocate and support one another, I want to offer some guiding questions to help you protect your peace in the days ahead:

  1. What do I need right now?
  2. Who can help, and who is best equipped to do so?
  3. Where do I feel safe and seen?
  4. How does my body feel right now?
  5. What act of self-care feels necessary? What acts of self-care feel doable?

These questions are gentle invitations to tune in, especially if you feel disconnected from your body. For some, emotions may manifest more physically than mentally. Listening to our bodies and taking small, nurturing steps can be incredibly grounding in uncertain times.

Remember, protecting your peace isn’t about withdrawing from the world but balancing how much of it you let in or being selective about what does come in. Holding space for yourself with grace and compassion can be one of the most empowering acts of resilience, and I’m here for all of it.
